Cannabis aficionados, rejoice! According to recent news reports, an Alberta-based study has shown that cannabis may contribute to resisting COVID-19.
University of Lethbridge researchers are studying approximately 12 strains for their effects on the novel coronavirus. “A number of them have reduced the number of these (virus) receptors by 73 per cent, the chance of it getting in is much lower…If they can reduce the number of receptors, there’s much less chance of getting infected,” explained Dr. Igor Kovalchuk, a researcher with the University of Lethbridge.
In particular, high-CBD strains are being studied due to their anti-inflammatory properties and so that users can consume high doses without impairment. But it will take time to understand exactly which strains may be resistant to COVID-19 and which “active ingredient” is at work here. As reported by the National Post, “Employing cannabis sativa strains over the past three months, the researcher said the effective balance between cannabis components THC and CBD … is still unclear in blocking the novel coronavirus.”
With the help of 3-D human tissue figures, the study is analyzing how cannabis may hinder COVID-19 orally and through the lungs and intestines. If the study results turn out to be commendable, “…the work could find practical medical use in the form of mouth wash, gargle, inhalants or gel caps,” Dr. Kovalchuk explained to the National Post.
Truly, this study brings hope to those concerned about COVID-19. In the meantime though, we highly stress the importance of social distancing, hand-washing, cleaning surfaces, and wearing masks to help prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.
